Booking It-September Update

The one good thing about extrememly hot weather, you have an excuse to stay in and read! Books are coming available left and right, 3 or more at a time on my library hold list and I feel like I'm drowning! Here's what I managed in August:

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner
Made from Scratch: Discovering the Pleasures of a Handmade Life
SHED Your Stuff, Change Your Life
Delia's Heart
Delia's Gift
Steady Days
The Bargain Junkie
Other People's Rejection Letters
The Pillars of the Earth(I liked this one so much, I placed a hold on World Without End before I was finished!)

I have 19 books I have to finish before the end of September. Yes, 19. My only hope to finish them is Baby Girl will be in preschool 16 hours a week!
Check out Life As Mom to see what's on other people's reading lists!

August Clutter Update

Just as I figured, August was a slow month. Things were nuts with cheer and soccer practices starting, getting ready for back to school, and just general life craziness. I managed a few things though. I just found out Baby Girl will be attending preschool 4 days a week for 4 hours a day so hopefully I can get back on track. My first thing I plan on tackling is a bunch of magazines I stored for whatever reasons and I haven't even opened up the storage tub and then the garage once it decides to get below 90 degrees!

15 magazines dropped off at the neighborhood laundry
5 gift cards used and recycled
7 garbage bags of stuff taken out of the Things room(I didn't even want to see what was in them, it was their project to tackle)

197-22=175 to go!

Mourning the Dillons Coupon Policy changes

UPDATE: Apparently, it was a corporate boo-boo! Here's the scoop

Dillons, why did you go and change your policy on coupons? Don't you know, you help me get more groceries than I can at Walmart for 1/4 of the price???????

Here's some of the, uh, highlights: effective 8/30/2010

Coupons will only double up to $0.50(ex. $0.55 will no longer double to $1.00)

Limit of 2 IP's per transaction(which I don't use IP's so this one isn't so bad for me)

No longer accepting expired coupons!

No longer can stack ecoupons with manufacturer coupons

Menu Plan Monday

Here's the plan:

Breakfasts and lunches: whatever we find(the Things eat both at school)

Dinners:
Fried chicken, carrots, beans
Hot Dogs, mac n cheese, green beans
Pot roast, potatoes, carrots
Nachos with chicken, tomatoes, and olives
Homemade pizza,salad
Steaks, baked potatoes, broccoli with cheese
Parmesan chicken, pasta, salad

Frugal Fridays-Sports and extra curricular activities on a budget

This is an old post but I thought it might help someone out before the hustle and bustle of the school year starts. I've added a couple more ideas that we've been implementing with a "*"

Financially, this has been one of the worst years for us ever. This is also the time in the Thing's lives that they want to participate in just about anything. Thing 2 is my soccer fiend and Thing 1 discovered she loves soccer also and this current school year is a, gulp, cheerleader. Participating in activities can break any bank but here's how we've done it with the minimum amount of out of pocket that we can.

Fundraise, fundraise, fundraise!
Not those crazy catalogs either! Thing 1 had one at the end of last year to raise cheer leading fees and instead of asking relatives to by a worthless trinket for $20(with Thing 1 only getting about $5 of that) we told them if they wanted, they could just give us the $ that they would have spent on something and we would apply it to her fees. (Ok, now on strangers we did do the catalog thing). Participate in as many as you can. If none are planned, offer to head up one! Other parents will be grateful also! Our best fundraiser was a Trivia Night. I advertised the heck out of it. It brought in almost $600(which for something that was kind of thrown together at the last moment, that was good!) that got divided up between the girls.
Bake sales, car washes, raffles, yard sales and more can be used to raise funds!

Check into scholarships
Times are hard, it doesn't hurt to take 10 minutes to fill out some forms to see if you qualify for some reduction of fees. I don't know about you but anything helps! In our school system, if you qualify for free or reduce lunches, the $50 athletic fee is waived on whatever sports your child plays. If you don't see anything about scholarships, just ask!

Buy used or borrow equipment
My crew have never had a new pair of cleats. Their feet grow way too fast to drop $40 or more on a pair of shoes that they are going to wear just a few weeks out of the year. Thing 2's last pair cost me $5(and they were Nikes). If you know someone that has an extra set of something, or if their child is taking a break, etc, ask if you can borrow. The Things are currently sharing shin guards since Thing 2 is playing now, and Thing 1 plays in spring. They also need the same color soccer socks so I imagine they will share a pair of them also!(ok, they are brother and sister and someone might not be comfortable doing this)
Craigslist, Ebay, and if you have a sports resale shop nearby can be great resources for finding what you need!

Clean out the house
Back in June, we held a yard sale. I made $76 from the sale, plus I sold extra books, Cd's, movies, and clothing to shops around town, making a total of $108 towards Thing 1's fees(and $25 in credit at a resale shop). I managed to get rid of over 300 items from the house that we weren't using(some were donated) , finding extra money that I didn't have to take from elsewhere. This was even a kind of spur of the moment thing. With more planning, I could have took some donations from relatives and made it even bigger!
Selling on Ebay and Craigslist are also options!

Ask for a payment plan
Thing 1's cheer fees were over $400 for uniforms, shoes, poms, camp, etc. That is a major chunk of change to come up with. In addition to all the fundraising, I asked if we could pay it out because small amounts of money are easier to come up with than a big one! We made payments over 5 months, slowly chipping away at the fee with our fundraising, help from relatives, and various selling, etc.

*Ask relatives to chip in
Instead of the grandparent buying some useless trinket, ask them contribute. We did this in order to buy Thing 1's viola for her birthday. We asked the grandparents instead of buying a present(Thing 1 was ok with this, she really wanted her own instrument) we asked that they just give cash so we could put towards it. All did, and they still bought her a small present. We only had to be out a few dollars ourselves to get her the viola.

*Have your child earn a portion
They can mow, help someone with chores, babysit, clean, tutor, or if old enough, find a summer job to help out. Thing 1 is currently having difficulty securing a "real" job since she is only 15 but she is planning on doing a mini cheer camp this summer to come up with half of this year's cheer fee.

We've only been doing this for about 3 years, so if there are moms out there with more ideas, please leave a comment!
For other great frugal ideas, check out Life As Mom!

Works for Me Wednesday

Baby Girl has finally decided she likes having her hair pulled back. Normally, it's curly and very crazy and she welcomes the change of having it pulled back out of her eyes. A problem we've encountered is she wants the look at her hair after it's fixed. The front is no problem, it's getting her positioned in front of the mirror so she can see the back. So I had a brainstorm, take a picture with the digital camera, then she can see it!

VOILA!
Easy peasey. Then it can be deleted after she is satisfied with the results!
This definitely Works for Me!

Booking It-August Update

Ok, the whole month of July, I read 6 books. Definitely a little slow for me but that's partially due to the waiting list at the library(Ive got a stack of 12 books to get read by the end of this month!) July was mostly easy reads, I've been wanting to catch up on the James Patterson Alex Cross series, which I managed to do!

Here's what I read in July:

Alex Cross's Trial by James Patterson

I , Alex Cross

Cross Country

Delia's Crossing by VC Andrews(I've been reading her stuff since high school)

Not Buying It, My Year without Shopping by Judith Levine

When Did I get like this? by Amy Wilson(so funny!)

I have a ton of books that'll be on this next month, including 2 that are in this list that I wanted to tackle at the beginning of the year. I didn't realize the classics were in such demand here!

Check out everyone's progress at Life As Mom !

Menu Plan Monday

I'm so hoping it cools off this week. The sweltering high 90's(actually 101 one day before the heat index). I didn't realize how much I need my oven until I couldn't use it! This is also the last full week the Things will be home...kind of sad but hopefully my grocery bill will go down!

Here's the plan for the week;

Breakfasts
Eggs
Cold cereal
Toaster streudel
all served with fruit

Lunch
Find your own

Dinners
Chicken fried rice with broccoli, carrots and mushrooms
Steaks on the grill, grilled zuchinni and potatoes
Cheeseburgers, homemade fries, carrot sticks
Enchiladas, corn, rice
Spaghetti with Italian sausage, salad
Cheeseburger macaroni(yeah, I know but kid requested), green beans
sandwiches/leftovers

12 New Things

Over at Like a Warm Cup of Coffee, Sarah Mae has set up a challenge to learn 12 new things, one a month. This might actually help me knock some stuff off my list!

Here's mine

September: break out the sewing machine, learn to use it, and make Baby Girl a dress.

I have a couple cute little patterns plus a ton of sites bookmarked, wanting to make

her some oh-so-adorable clothes to wear.

October:learn how to make bread. I have issues with yeast. Or it has issues with me, haven't

figured that one out yet :)

November: learn to crochet hats. I haven't got pass blankets. Going in a circle make me dizzy.

December: Make homemade gifts to give to friends and relatives this year(mixes, etc)

January: Look for ways to bring in more income from writing

February: Start a quilt. if I started practicing with the sewing machine in September, I need to
get one made that I have had planned to do for years now.

March: Plant a garden.

April: Take a cake decorating class. I've always wanted to learn!

May: learn soapmaking. This includes laundry soap!

June: Get the house organized(the older crew will be out of school and can help!)

July: Actually take a vacation, without the kids!

August: Enjoy the month before school with my crew...my oldest will be starting high school, the
boy will be in 7th grade, and the youngest preschool at the end of the month. :(

Finer Things Friday

Our parks department has a wonderful little wading pool(free!) that is the perfect size for Baby Girl to splash and play without worrying big kids(it's for 6 and under only). I found out last night that it's closing for the season on Sunday and we hadn't been all summer! So I asked Joseph if he would take us(my truck isn't running) and he said sure.

I got a little teary eyed while we were there because I realized last year the water was alot higher one her and friend pointed out on facebook, she's lost the baby look.
:(
Yes, my baby is growing up. She wants to go to school, ride a bike, and do more stuff like the Things. But that's ok, she still has 3 more years we can come to this pool and enjoy the day!

To me, that's one of the finer things!

Frugal Fridays-Loving my library

Our libraries here rock! Really, they do. They have great programs for everyone, classes, internet, an awesome selection of books(and a great system to find the book if they don't have it!), DVD's, Cd's, and more. Right now, with no vehicle, we can only go once a week. But that's ok. That gave the crew more reading time this summer. One of their popular programs is the summer reading program for kids and teens(plus adults this year!). Kids read, track their hours and get fabulous stuff! The coveted item in my house is the "Flip card".

On it are 3 dozen discounts and freebies to local things. Free kid's meal from Chik Fil-A, free ice cream at Dairy Queen, free Crazy Bread from Little Cesar's, a free 1 day family pass to the YMCA, Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, and more! We tend to stick with the total freebies making it great frugal fun(go for a Jump Mania, followed by lunch at Chik Fil-A, with dessert at Dairy Queen!)

Menu Plan Monday

I will be so glad when it cools off...right now I'll take the 80's(and not the high 90's!) The a/c can barely keep up and turning on the stove never helps!

Here's the plan(which can be substituted with sandwiches of needed)

Breakfasts
Eggs
Pancakes
Oatmeal
Cold cereal
all served with fruit or juice

Lunches
Find your own

Dinners
Turkey on the grill, corn on the cob, carrots
Country fried steak with gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans
Chicken Bacon subs, various grilled veggies
Grilled Ham, bake potaoes on the grill, zuchinni

The turkey and ham should stretch in 3-5 meals each so I haven't planned more than 4 dinners this week.

July Clutter update

July found me slacking off again....Joe's work picked up so he took Thing 2 to work, Thing 1 was gone for 2 weeks to my mother in laws which left me to wrangle baby girl mostly by myself. I have a feeling the decluttering mission won't pick back up until after the Things are back in school.

Here's the sad number

15 magazines sent to the laundry

1 refrigerator picked up for recycling
4 gift cards with $0 balance taken out of my wallet

Total 20
217-20=197 to go
